The mission of the School is to establish one of the leading nursing institutions of excellence in academic education and clinical training that forms the basis for enriching the knowledge base in the nursing profession, improving the quality of nursing education, and building the requisite capacity among professionals in this area.
The nature of nursing education and clinical training is to produce knowledgeable, analytical, and evaluative professionals who are capable of practising at grassroots level, are acquainted with and sensitive to the diverse needs of patients, and demonstrate the ability to practise locally, nationally, and internationally.
The programme shall motivate learners to be involved in continuous professional education.
Purpose
The Diploma in Nursing will enable the learner to function as a clinically focused, service-orientated, independent Registered General Nurse who is able to render nursing care as determined by the appropriate legislative framework, in alignment with the national health needs of South Africa and the envisioned National Health Insurance Plan and Primary Health Care delivery.
The qualification will provide a basis for decision-making about what is within and beyond the defined scope of practice, as well as an understanding of the referral system in place for anything outside of the scope.
The qualifying learner will apply evidence-based nursing practice based on research or established practices that have proven to be effective both nationally and internationally within the profession.
Nurses receiving this qualification will be competent to practise in all contexts of the healthcare system.
